Using Web Tools and Methods to Support Earth Science Collaborations
Many Earth science projects have participants that span multiple timezones,
organizations and domains. Sometimes members of the group have never even met
face to face. The requirement to be co-located in order to collaborate is no longer the
norm since there are now so many alternative methods of virtual communication and
coordination using web tools and methods. There are many tools (Drupal, Mediawiki,
Google +, Twitter, Facebook) that support communication, coordination and
collaboration around a topic. The good thing about all of these tools is that they are
flexible and customizable, but this also poses a challenge of how to set-up the tools
to best support your group. Often these collaboration are supported by an ad-hoc
member of the group, who is working within the group, but also is supporting the
collaboration of the group. This person often will have created methods to supporting
the group such as sending out the email reminders, hosting the telecons and
updating the web pages. This at times can be a frustrating job because only a small
fraction of the group participates at any given time. This Birds of a Feather session is
intended to bring together these ad-hoc community manager practitioners to
compare what is working to support virtual collaboration and what are the
challenges. Hopefully, the outcome of this session will be a web-based forum to
improve the efficiency of these Earth science community managers.

Community Development
A community is a group of people who interact and share common interests, beliefs, resources and experiences. They form relationships and identities as members of the group. An online or virtual community is a group that primarily interacts digitally rather than in person, for social, professional or other purposes. Building an active online community provides value to companies through customer feedback, advocacy and barriers to competitors. Successful communities focus on clear objectives, understanding members' needs, strategic engagement, and using appropriate technology platforms to foster long-term growth and participation.

YouTube is one of the most globally utilised online content sharing sites, enabling new commercial enterprise, education opportunities and facilities for vernacular creativity (Burgess, 2006). Its user engagement demonstrates significant capacity to develop online communities, alongside its arguably more popular use as a distribution platform to monetise one’s branded self (Senft, 2013). However, as a subset of Alphabet Incorporated, its access is often restricted by governments of Asian Pacific countries who disagree with the ideology of the business. Despite this, online communities thrive in these countries, bringing into question the sorts of augmentations used by its participants. This article reframes the discussion beyond restrictive regulation to focus on the DIY approach (augmentation) of community building through the use of hidden infrastructures (algorithms). This comparative study of key YouTube channels in several Asia Pacific countries highlights the sorts of techniques that bypass limiting infrastructures to boost online community engagement and growth. Lastly, this article reframes the significance of digital intermediation to highlight the opportunities key agents contribute to strengthening social imaginaries within the Asia Pacific region.ESOMAR 2010 - Digital Culture
This document describes an initiative called Reflecteur created by VivaKi to monitor digital culture through analyzing user-generated blog content. It focused on four topics: parenting, celebrity gossip, consumer technology, and timewasters. Data was gathered from a network of core blogs and those they linked to in order to identify highly linked posts that were more influential. Posts were then analyzed and summarized in weekly reports to provide insights into trends in digital culture. The goal was to help marketing agencies understand digital culture and incorporate those insights into their strategies.
EXPERIMEDIA: Experiments in live social and networked media
The document describes a project called EXPERIMEDIA that aims to conduct experiments in live social and networked media using future internet technologies. The project will explore new forms of social interaction and experiences enabled by future media internet. It will engage users from diverse communities through the research and development cycle. A variety of experiments are proposed, including personalized entertainment, social communities using 3D environments, capturing real world environments in 3D, and ensuring perceptual congruity between real and virtual worlds. The project calls for additional partners to join and conduct experiments starting in May 2012 and May 2013. Social computing has the potential to be much more than just web 2.0 for business. It shifts value from ownership and institutions to experience and communities. Social computing empowers individuals through one-to-many and many-to-many connections. When adopted, it can increase productivity, engagement, collaboration and knowledge sharing among employees. Companies should embrace social computing by understanding individuals' needs, nurturing enthusiasts, and allowing participation to drive critical mass in communities.

It was based upon a great deal of research and study of the topic and should help those who are seeking information or wish to start an online community, as it pulls together a great amount of data and resources on the topic.
Social Learning

Imagine an IoT processing system that is already quite mature and production-ready and for which client coverage is growing and scaling and performance aspects are life and death questions. The system has Redis, MongoDB, and stream processing based on ksqldb. In this talk, firstly, we will analyze scaling approaches and then select the proper ones for our system.
Apps Break Data
How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
